This workshop, designed for those organizations looking to develop trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive programs, will introduce and teach the process and steps toward building sustainable systemic structures through the integration of organization development strategies with a trauma-informed systems model (ARC).
Overview:
Individuals who are impacted by traumatic stress present for care within the range of human services systems. For most organizations, a primary goal is the delivery of empathic, respectful services in a manner that is sensitive to trauma impact, informed and effective in its approach, and realistic within the constraints (resources and challenges) of the particular system. However, the very real challenge of establishing sustainable organizational change may feel like an insurmountable hurdle that halts the process of internal transformation before it is able to begin.
In this workshop, the presenters merge expertise in organization development strategies with expertise in the delivery of trauma-informed services using an evidence-based, flexible framework (ARC) for treatment of traumatic stress. Designed for organizations looking to develop trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive programs supported by a sustainable organizational system, this two-day training will review the ARC framework and introduce and teach the process and steps toward building sustainable systemic structures. Participants will actively engage in exercises to begin the process of assessing program structures, goals, and stakeholders; developing priorities for change as they relate to trauma-informed practices; and developing concrete action steps and the processes to achieve them.
This workshop is relevant for personnel from the range of human service organizations, including outpatient treatment centers, residential programs, hospitals, schools, advocacy programs, shelters, etc. When possible, the presenters encourage organizations to attend the workshop as working “teams” (i.e., 2-4 individuals), in order to best facilitate generalization and real-world organizational change.
Prerequisites:
This workshop is designed for those individuals within an organization (i.e., program directors and administrators, supervisors, lead clinicians, education/clinical/residential directors, etc.) who have interest in working toward sustainable organizational change. Content is geared toward an intermediate to advanced level of training. Although program content is focused on the building of trauma-informed services within human service delivery systems, this workshop does not assume a mental health training background.

Margaret E. Blaustein, Ph.D. is a practicing clinical psychologist whose career has focused on the understanding and treatment of complex childhood trauma and its sequelae. With Kristine Kinniburgh, Dr. Blaustein is co-developer of the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) treatment framework (Kinniburgh & Blaustein, 2005), and co-author of the text, Treating Complex Trauma in Children and Adolescents: How to Foster Resilience through Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (Blaustein & Kinniburgh, 2010).
